Into the mind of a SEO consultant

Hello and welcome to my personal blog. If we haven't already met, my name is Kevin Dhimitri and I am a self-taught SEO consultant NYC. I first discovered SEO when I created an art gallery website many years ago. I wanted to promote it and get traffic to the site, so I figured out how to do keyword research, on-page optimization, link building, and so forth. Fast forward around 5 years, I now am an independent SEO specialist who works with a handful of clients.

My goal is to ultimately help all of my clients grow their businesses and become more profitable. Many local businesses I speak with have a need for more phone calls and inquiries. I mean, what business doesn't? The methodology used to increase your lead generation efforts will vary based on which digital marketing consultant you ask. My particular focus is on search engine optimization, meaning increasing your entire brand's visibility on search engines. The reason why I prefer SEO over paid advertising, PPC, Facebook advertising is because organic marketing is long-term and adds intrinsic value to your business. The work done from your SEO company or freelancer (assuming they use white-hat strategies) will persist overtime.

One of the main problems that small businesses face with SEO is finding the right service provider to help them grow their business. To vet SEO experts, I recommend asking for case studies, proof of rankings, and thorough explanations on how their strategies will help you. Someone who can't provide any past references will probably either be a beginner or not very good. If its a novice SEO, well you can give him/her a chance if their strategy seems reasonable. Otherwise, please take your due diligence. Unfortunately, SEO has no real barriers to entry, so you have to be very smart when going about your vetting process. If you do not, then you could end up with someone who is hurting your online presence rather than improving it.

Another issue I've come across is businesses using cheap, outsourced SEO from websites like Fiverr. Someone who is experienced with search engine optimization can perhaps utilize Fiverr freelancers successfully, but only if they fit into a larger overall SEO strategy. You can't just spam your website with Fiverr gigs and hope to rank with no real plan! In most cases, what will end up happening is you will get a bunch of spammy, low-quality backlinks built directly to your main website, aka money site. If this happens, then it will certainly make your next SEO consultant's job harder. There will have to be a bad link cleanup and manual disavow process. This is to remove bad backlinks in your portfolio which are hurting your website's credibility and authority in the eyes of search engines such as Google.

At the end of the day, a job of a SEO consultant should be to devise an actionable strategy based on what's proven to work. How do you find what works? Very simple... look at your competitors! Your competitors on search engines already rank at the top. You need to look at their website, backlinks, content strategy, etc. to figure out how they were able to get to the top. Then, you go about doing the same thing for your own site. If you do this, then you will certainly see results with your SEO strategy over time.
